The foundation of the estate dates back to the late 19th century when François Xavier Julien first purchased several hectares of vineyard land in the towns of Comblanchien and Nuits-St.-Georges in the Côte d’Or. In the 1920s his son Armand Julien took over the direction of the estate. Following World War II, Armand’s primary goals were to rebuild and expand the estate, which had been largely destroyed by the Germans. It was during this period, in the 1950s and 60s, that the vineyard plots of Aloxe-Corton Les Valozières and Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru Les Bousselots were acquired.

The torch was then passed to Gérard Julien, who continued the development of the estate in his own right with the further addition of vineyard plots in appellations AOC Côte de Nuits Villages, Nuits-St.-Georges and Echézeaux Grand Cru.

Today the domaine is operated by Etienne Gérard, the founder’s great grandson. The estate currently covers a surface area of 10.5 hectares (26 acres), stretching north to the Echézeaux Grand Cru vineyard (near the Châ teau du Clos de Vougeot) and south to the vineyard of Aloxe-Corton Les Valozières.
